Chlorinated paraffin has been used downhole for 40 years. The first drilling patent was filed by Witco in the 1980s. A recent drilling patent by a Chinese company demonstrates the utility and versatility of the lubricant. https://patents.google.com/patent/CN112592700A/en
Chlorinated paraffin is an extreme pressure lubricant that is used extensively in the metal working industry. It activates at downhole temperatures, and exhibits superior surface activity in metal-on-metal interface. It has a high viscosity which enhances formulation thickness.
Chlorinated paraffin is traditionally the lowest cost extreme pressure lubricant on the market.
