Glycols are natural shale inhibitors that reduce torque and drag, while also enhancing pipe-on-formation lubricity and rate of penetration by maintaining a smooth wellbore.
The primary role of glycol is to control clay accretion and bit balling. They have a low freezing point (like glycol antifreeze) which reduces the pour point of the finished formulated lube package.
Formulators often blend solids like graphite, graphene, asphaltite, sulfonated asphalt. You can also blend sulfurized lubricants and vegetable-based lubes.
Not if you're using tank bottoms. You get the performance of glycols at a low cost.
